Microsoft Azure Backup Vault/Recovery Service Vault - An Overview

Microsoft Azure Backup Vault is a storage entity in Azure that is used to hold backup data for various Azure resources such as virtual machines (VMs), databases, and file shares. It centralizes backup management and provides secure, reliable, and scalable storage for long-term data retention, disaster recovery, and data protection.

Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Vault is a storage entity in Azure designed for managing and storing recovery points created by Azure Backup and Site Recovery services. It provides comprehensive data protection and disaster recovery solutions, ensuring that your data and applications are protected and can be restored quickly in case of data loss or outages.

An Azure Backup Vault monitoring tool / Azure Recovery Service Vault monitoring tool is crucial to experience the platform at it's highest potential. Use Applications Manager to maintain your vault's health, performance, and reliability.

Creating a new Microsoft Azure Backup Vault/Recovery Service Vault Monitor

Monitored Parameters

Navigate to the Category View by clicking the Monitors tab. Hover over 'Child Monitors' under Microsoft Azure in the Cloud Apps table, and then select the Backup Vaults (or) Recovery Service Vaults  monitor from the displayed tooltip. This action will display the bulk configuration view for Azure Backup Vault/Azure Recovery Service in three tabs:

  • Availability tab gives the Availability history for the past 24 hours or 30 days.
  • Performance tab gives the Health Status and events for the past 24 hours or 30 days.
  • List view enables you to perform bulk admin configurations.

The Microsoft Azure monitor provides a brief detail of the Azure Backup Vault/Azure Recovery Service Vault under the given subscription. Following are the list of metrics monitored in Azure Backup Vault monitoring tool/Azure Recovery Service Vault monitoring tool in their corresponding tabs:

  • Azure Backup Vault/Recovery Service Vault monitoring is only supported for Azure Global accounts.
  • The metrics under the Backup and Site Recovery tabs are only supported for the Azure Recovery Service Vault monitor.

Performance Overview

Registered ServersThe total number of registered servers.

BACKUP EVENT STATISTICS
Backup Success RateThe percentage of successful backup events that occurred in the vault between the poll interval (in %).
Backup Failure RateThe percentage of failed backup events that occurred in the vault between the poll interval (in %).
RESTORE EVENT STATISTICS
Restore Success RateThe percentage of successful restore events that occurred in the vault between the poll interval (in %).
Restore Failure RateThe percentage of failed restore events that occurred in the vault between the poll interval (in %).
BACKUP HEALTHY EVENTS
Backup Healthy Event RateThe number of health events (Healthy) created per minute by the vault pertaining to the backup job health, between the poll interval (in events/min).

Note:
  • The Backup Jobs metrics are categorized under Performance Polling. To modify the polling interval, go to Settings → Performance Polling. In the Optimize Data Collection tab, select Azure Recovery Service Vault as the Monitor Type and Backup Jobs as the Metric Name. Choose 'Configure a custom interval' and set the polling interval to at least 4 hours. If the 'Collect data at customized time interval' is set to more than 24 hours, the top high-severity Backup Jobs performed in the last 24 hours will be fetched.
  • By default, the Backup Jobs table displays the top 200 high-severity jobs based on status. To adjust the number of top jobs displayed, navigate to Settings → Performance Polling. In the Optimize Data Collection tab, select Azure Recovery Service Vault as the Monitor Type and Performance as the Metric Name. Then, set the Number of Jobs to Fetch within the range of 50 to 500 as needed.
