While managing Microsoft 365 licenses or creating Microsoft 365 users, I get the following error: Unable to update license for this user. The set of licenses includes two or more service plans which cannot be assigned at the same time.

This article will explain the possible scenarios at which you can encounter this error and the steps you can take to resolve them.

Scenario(s):

  1. Setting up Microsoft 365 licenses during user creation.
  2. Setting up Microsoft 365 licenses during user modification.

Potential root cause: Licenses being assigned are conflicting with one another.

Troubleshooting methods:

  1. Check if the same combination of licenses can be set on the Microsoft 365 portal directly
  2. Verify with an alternate service account under Microsoft 365 configuration page of ADManager Plus (Admin tab --> Microsoft 365)
