The city of New Orleans declares a state of emergency after a ransomware attack

On December 13, the city of New Orleans was brought down by a ransomware attack in the early hours of the morning. The city of New Orleans’ emergency preparedness department, managed by the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, called NOLA Ready, tweeted about the attack on its webpage.

What happened?

The attack initially occurred at 5am and the city’s IT department gave instructions to employees to shut down the computers and disconnect from Wi-Fi to stay protected. The city's servers were then taken offline.

The city’s emergency services were not affected in the attack, and the police and fire departments are functioning as usual. The state and the federal law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the matter. Government agencies appear to be the top target of various threat actors. In November, there was another ransomware attack targeting several agencies of the Louisiana government.
