On March 14, 2022, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in Germany revealed that the German subsidiary of Russia's state oil company, Rosneft, fell victim to a cyberattack. The Anonymous hacker group has claimed responsibility for the attack and is reported to have stolen 20 terabytes of data from Rosneft’s systems.
According to local news reports, the attack hasn’t affected its business but several systems and processes have been compromised. The BSI had warned businesses of an increased risk of cyberattacks after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It has also issued a new cybersecurity warning to other companies in the oil sector. Besides Rosneft, the hacker group claimed to have already attacked Rosneft's global website in February and has infiltrated several Russian institutions since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.
