Azure file storage is a shared cloud-based service that offers server-less file storage to customers. With Azure file storage, you can store your enterprise's files, and create file shares without the need for an on-premises file server. The file shares can also be accessed on Windows, Linux and MacOS systems, which can be helpful in enterprises that use a combination of these operating systems. This is an economical option for companies that do not want to spend time and money managing an on-premises file server.

How exactly does it work?

Azure file storage is part of the Microsoft Azure cloud computing service. It enables enterprises to store their data on Azure cloud's shared storage, and share files which can be accessed by users, who have the necessary permissions. Azure file shares work on the industry standard SMB protocol which allows for quick, secure transfer of large files over the internet. These are the steps to create a file share on Azure:

  • The first step is to create a storage account. This storage account will allow you to store a certain amount of data depending on your subscription. You can also create multiple storage accounts.
  • To create a storage account, open the Azure portal and navigate to Create Resource on the top left and select Storage Account. Then click on Add to begin setting up your storage account.
  • In the right pane of the window that opens, enter the required details.
  • Now your storage account is ready.
  • To enable file share, click on the newly created storage account and under Services, click on Files. Then click on File Share at the top and enter the required details. Your File share is ready.

Azure file storage is very flexible and does not require any setting up or managing, that a traditional server does. Therefore it can be particularly appealing to SMBs. In Azure for a user to access a file share, they have to be given access to the security keys. However, these keys give access to the entire storage account, instead of a particular file. This means that the keys have to be given around every time a user has to access the files and multiple users can have access to entire storage accounts.
