FSRM is a role service on Windows server that allows you to manage files and set storage limits on a server. This role service should be added to a Windows server, if it needs to be used as a file server.

What can you do with FSRM?

  • Quota management: This refers to limiting the amount of space given to certain folders. You can create quota templates that can be used to assign space for files and folders. This will prevent unimportant files or certain file types from taking up too much space on your server.
  • File classification management: This feature is meant to simplify the process of applying security policies on files. The files are classified into groups and the security policy is applied to the whole group. This way, new files can be added to the different groups depending on the security policies they need.

  • Storage reports: This helps you find the details of a disk storage use. For example, it can tell you the type of files that take up the maximum amount of space. These reports can help you administer your file server more efficiently.

How to add FSRM role in Windows server?

  • Open Server Manager.
  • Click on Add Roles and Features. This will open the Add Roles and Features Wizard. Click Next to continue.
  • Select Role-based or Feature-based installation in the next window. Click Next to continue.
  • Click on Select a server from the server pool. Click Next to continue.
  • Expand the File and Storage services node to select the FSRM role. This will initiate the installation of the FSRM role.

File servers are integral to the functioning of enterprises and they contain large amounts of sensitive data. However, with so many users accessing the file servers at all times, the chances of a security incident is very high. Monitoring the user activities on file servers is an effective way of detecting any unusual user behavior or security threat before any harm is done.
