What is the Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for ITSM Platforms?
It is Gartner's evaluation of the IT service management platform market, positioning 16 vendors on Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision across four quadrants: Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries, and Niche Players. The 2026 edition marks the report's return after Gartner retired it following the 2022 edition.
Why did Gartner retire the report, and why is it back?
Gartner retired the Magic Quadrant after 2022, citing a market that had matured and stabilized, and covered the market instead through its Market Guide in the interim. The 2026 return reflects how much has changed since: AI is redrawing what an ITSM platform can do, and cost scrutiny has made spending discipline as important as capability.
What do the four quadrants mean?
Leaders score high on both execution and vision. Challengers execute well today and may dominate a large segment. Visionaries show strong vision with comparatively lower execution. Niche Players serve specific segments successfully.
Is a Leader always the best choice?
No—Gartner's own methodology guidance says focusing only on the Leaders quadrant is not always the best course of action, and a Challenger or Niche Player may support your needs better. The right choice is the platform that fits your requirements, adoption reality, and total cost of ownership.
