Uncovering the Colonial Pipeline attack

Colonial Pipeline, a jet fuel and gasoline provider for the eastern United States, was the victim of a ransomware attack carried out by DarkSide on May 6, 2021. The attackers gained initial access via an exposed password for a VPN account. As a result, the company was forced to halt all pipeline operations to contain the damage.

The attackers demanded a ransom of 75 bitcoins (approximately $4.4 million) in exchange for nearly 100GB of stolen data. As a result of the Colonial Pipeline cyberattack, gas prices rose, and there was a shortage of gas due to panic buying.
