How to automatically update ME MDM app on Android devices?

Description

ME MDM Android app gets periodically updated as explained here. However, there are certain scenarios where you might to initaite an update of the ME MDM app - to utlize new features, security updates etc. To automatically update the ME MDM app outside it usual periodic cycle, follow the steps given below:

Steps 

  • Configure Android for Work(Android Enterprise) in MDM as explained here. This is required for silent app installation/uninstallation/update.
  • Login into Play for Work using the same Google account used to configure Android for Work.
  • Search for ManageEngine MDM and select the app from the results shown.

  • Click on Approve to allow the app to be added to the App Repository. App approving implies the app has been approved by the enterprise to be installed on the devices.

  • Click on Approve again, to approve the permissions requested on behalf of the organization.

  • Also, ensure you have selected the option to auto-approve any future permissions the app may require. It is to be noted that these preferences can be modfied at any time.

  • Now go back ot the MDM server, click on Device Mgmt and select App Repository from the left menu. Click on Sync Apps and select Play Store Apps to manually sync the purchased apps. MDM also automatically syncs the apps to the App Repository every 24 hours.
  • Thus, ME MDM app installed on the managed Android devices will be automatically updated using Play for Work.
  • To manually initiate the ME MDM app update, click on Device Mgmt and select App Repository from the left menu. A message will display the number of apps with impending updates.
  • Click on the message and verify if ME MDM is listed as one of the apps with an update available.
  • If yes, click on the app and select Update All option present under Yet to be distribute updates. This updates the ME MDM app across all the managed devices.

NOTE: It is recommended to use this only in case the ME MDM app has a critical update. If not, it is better to have the ME MDM app update through its periodic update cycle. The list of enhancements made for every update is listed here.
