When an organization undergoes restructuring like a merger or an acquisition, it can be costly to maintain two separate Active Directory infrastructures. IT administrators are tasked with migrating objects from one Active Directory Domain Service (AD DS) environment to another to enable sharing of resources.

Irrespective of the size of the organization and the number of associated objects, the tool and the process of the migration remains the same. The Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) is a free utility that facilitates the migration of users, computers, and groups between two Active Directory domains, whether they're in the same forest or in different forests.

Prerequisites for installing Microsoft ADMT

Here are some system requirements to consider before initiating the migration tool:

  • The source and the target domains should be running on any one of the following operating systems: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, or Windows Server 2012 R2.
  • Install an SQL server database instance for ADMT to store data in.
  • During migration, use a user account in the BUILTIN\Administrators group of both domains.
  • Migration won?t work if computers are configured as read-only domain controllers or if they are a part of a server core configuration.
