209003: Fragment database limit exceeded

Cisco ASA is a security device that provides the combined capabilities of a firewall, an antivirus, and an intrusion prevention system. It also facilitates virtual private network (VPN) connections.It helps to detect threats and stop attacks before they spread through the network.

Message: %ASA-4-209003:Fragment database limit of number exceeded:src =source_address,dest =dest_address,proto = protocol,id =number.

Event 209003 is generated when too many IP fragments are awaiting reassembly simultaneously.The message contains the:

  • Maximum number of fragments.
  • Source and destination IP addresses.
  • Protocol.
  • Identifier.

How could you resolve this situation?

To prevent fragmentation, see the sysopt connection tcpmss bytes command in the command reference guide. If the events keeps recurring, it might denote a denial of service attack in progress. Contact the remote peer administrator or upstream provider.
