Do I need to back up my OneDrive for Business sites?

Ransomware is a growing threat, and experts estimate the cost of these attacks at $7.5 billion in the USA alone in 2019. Since most ransomware attacks stem from a small mistake made by just one end user, like clicking on a phishing email or losing their credentials, the threat of ransomware cannot be eliminated completely.

Ransomware usually targets computers and on-premises storage systems, but there are scenarios where ransomware can affect cloud storage solutions like OneDrive for Business. This post will discuss how ransomware can affect files and folders in your OneDrive for Business sites, the native data protection tools Microsoft provides and their limitations, and how you can insure yourself against ransomware threats.

The native feature to combat ransomware and its limitations

Microsoft provides a feature called Files Restore to recover from instances like this. With Files Restore, you can restore your entire OneDrive for Business site to a previous point in time. You can restore your entire OneDrive for Business site to a point before the ransomware affected your site and get all the data back, but there are a few limitations:

  • Files Restore uses version history and the Recycle Bin to restore OneDrive, so it's subject to the same restrictions as those features. When version history is turned off, Files Restore won't be able to restore files to a previous version.
  • Deleted files can't be restored after they've been removed from the site collection Recycle Bin—whether they were manually deleted or the Recycle Bin was emptied.
  • Albums are not restored.
  • If you upload a file or folder again after deleting it, Files Restore will skip the restore operation for that file or folder.

The RecoveryManager Plus way

The best way to protect your organization against ransomware is to deploy a backup and restoration solution. Having a backup handy allows you to restore your data whenever you want, and effectively recover from a ransomware attack.

RecoveryManager Plus is one such tool that can help insure you against ransomware. It offers the following features to ensure easy recovery from ransomware:

  • Complete OneDrive for Business backup: Back up all items and folders in your OneDrive for Business sites, from which you can restore your entire site to any previous point in time.
  • Incremental backups: Incrementally back up only the changes made to files and folders since the last backup cycle, and ensure you don't lose a lot of your recent files when you recover files from backup.
  • File-level restoration: Restore individual files to their original location or to a new location. You can also directly download the files from the backup if needed.
  • Site-level restoration: In case of a ransomware attack, restore all files and folders to your OneDrive for Business site from backups in a few clicks.
  • Share permission restoration: Restore all files and folders, along with their original share permissions intact, ensuring there are no disruptions to end users after you recover from a ransomware attack.
  • Encryption: Secure your backups with AES-256 bit encryption, and add an additional layer of security to your OneDrive data.
