What is Network security: Restrict NTLM: Audit NTLM authentication in this domain setting?

Network security: Restrict NTLM: Audit NTLM authentication in this domain is a security policy setting that audits the authentication traffic to that domain controller. NTLM is an older Windows authentication software that has been known to be vulnerable to man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, brute force attacks, SMB relay and so on. Therefore auditing the incoming traffic for NTLM authentication can help a network administrator decide whether NTLM authentication should be restricted on the network.

The possible values for this policy:

  • Disable: The domain controller will not audit the NTLM authentication traffic.
  • Enable for domain accounts to domain servers: This will log events for NTLM authentication requests from domain accounts to domain servers.
  • Enable for domain accounts: This will log events when domain accounts send NTLM authentication requests.
  • Not defined: This policy is not defined and hence the NTLM authentication traffic will not be audited.
