Why Endpoint Central remains the top choice for IT admins

Platform usability

Endpoint Central9.0
Atera8.7

Featuring a unified console, rapid policy enforcement, and 56+ predefined templates, Endpoint Central is built for admins who need to move fast. Features like zero-touch enrollment and automated onboarding ensure teams transition from installation to actively managing endpoints in hours, not weeks.

Ease of implementation

Endpoint Central7.8
Atera6.4

Getting started with Endpoint Central is a smooth process with little to no learning curve. Alongside its robust built-in capabilities, it offers native integrations with the mission-critical tools your team already uses, such as ServiceNow, Zendesk, and threat detection platforms like Check Point.

Endpoint protection capabilities

Endpoint Central8.3
Atera7.4

Endpoint Central goes beyond standard UEM to include built-in EDR, browser security, and kernel-level endpoint controls. Atera’s security capabilities depend on third-party add-ons. For teams that need security and management from one platform rather than two, the gap here is the one that matters most.

Native Endpoint Central features that Atera lacks

Endpoint Central is a UEM solution that includes all of Atera’s native features, such as RMM, Patch Management, and SDP. However, Atera completely lacks the following essential capabilities:

  • No native EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response)

Atera has no endpoint detection and response of its own. Threat detection and investigation require the Bitdefender Advanced Threat Security add-on, which is billed separately.

  • No native endpoint privilege management

Atera’s role controls govern who can log into the Atera console, not local admin rights on the devices it manages. Removing standing admin rights or granting Just-in-Time access needs a separate tool such as Keeper Security.

  • No native mobile device management

Atera has no built-in MDM. Managing mobile devices means adding a separate integration, either Miradore for policy enforcement or Bitdefender’s mobile add-on for malware protection, significantly increasing the cost.

  • No integrated DLP (Data Loss Prevention)

There are no controls over USB device usage, file transfers, or sensitive data leaving managed endpoints. Organizations that need to enforce data movement policies must consider opting for a separate DLP tool.

  • No self-service portal

Atera doesn’t offer a native IT self-service portal for end users. Every software request, device issue, or access need goes through a technician. That keeps ticket volumes high and admins buried in requests that users could have handled themselves.

FEATUREEndpoint Centralatera
Platform and deployment
Platform typeUnified Endpoint Management (UEM) covering the full device lifecycle from enrollment to retirement, within a single console and a single agent.Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) platform, designed for device visibility, alerting, and reactive helpdesk support.
OS imaging and deploymentNative bare-metal OS imaging, both online and offline, for new and legacy hardware. Zero-touch deployment for bulk onboarding without manual configuration. Not available. Atera has no native OS imaging capability. Organizations needing large-scale provisioning must bring in a separate imaging tool entirely.
Deployment modelCloud and fully on-premises, including air-gapped environments. Organizations with data residency or compliance requirements can deploy without sending data to the cloud.Cloud-only SaaS. There is no on-premises deployment option, which can be a blocker for regulated industries or government environments.
Supported operating systemsWindows, macOS, Linux, iOS, iPadOS, Android, tvOS, and ChromeOS, all managed from one console. Also supports Android Open Source Platform and IoT devices.Windows, macOS, and Linux for desktop. Mobile OS support requires a separate Miradore integration and is not managed in the same console.
Ready-to-use configurationsOver 50 ready-to-use configuration templates and 10,000+ software deployment templates, enabling teams to start managing within hours of setup.Scripting and basic automation are available, but the template library is significantly smaller and more dependent on custom scripting.

Patch management
Third-party patch supportAutomated patching for Windows, macOS, Linux, BIOS, drivers, and a catalog of 850+ third-party applications including Java, Adobe, Chrome, and more, available across all plan tiers.Automated patch management is available, but third-party patching has a narrow catalog and less control on scheduling.
Self-service portal for patchesEnd users can view and apply approved patches through a self-service portal, reducing admin workload without losing policy control over what gets installed. Not available. All patch actions require a technician, meaning patch cycles depend entirely on admin availability.
System health policyDefine and enforce health baselines across endpoints, triggering automated remediation if a device falls out of compliance with the defined state. Not available. System health policies are not a native capability in Atera.
Patch test groupsStage patches to a pilot group first, validate stability, then auto-approve for the broader fleet, reducing the risk of rolling a bad patch to all devices at once.Patch test groups are available. Atera allows staged deployment with manual approval workflows.
Endpoint security
Endpoint DLPNative data loss prevention built in: USB and peripheral device control across 18+ device types, file transfer restrictions, and data movement policies enforced without a third-party tool. Not available. Atera has no native DLP capability. Organizations needing data controls must bring in a separate security product.
EDR and threat detectionBuilt-in endpoint detection and response, driven by Zia AI, with MITRE ATT&CK mapping, alert correlation, and guided incident response. No additional product required. No built-in feature. Relies on ThreatDown (Malwarebytes) integration, which is billed per endpoint on top of the base Atera subscription.
Next-gen antivirus and ransomware protectionBehavior-based NGAV with zero-day threat protection and built-in ransomware defense, covering your Windows environment from a single console. No native antivirus or ransomware protection. Requires integration with third-party products to cover these capabilities.
Compliance policiesBuilt-in CIS compliance templates covering 90+ benchmarks, enabling teams to assess, enforce, and report on compliance posture without building policies from scratch. Faster audit readiness with zero third-party setup required. Not available. Atera has no built-in CIS compliance templates. Getting compliant requires manual policy creation or a separate compliance tool, adding time and cost to the process.
Browser securityManage Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Internet Explorer from one console. Enforce web filtering, control extensions, restrict downloads, and isolate untrusted sites to block browser-based attacks. Not available natively. Atera has no built-in browser security module. Web filtering requires a third-party DNS or security integration.
Endpoint privilege managementMachine-level and application-level privilege management in one place. Remove standing admin rights, allow self-elevation for approved applications, and grant time-bound access with Just-in-Time policies.Limited. Atera’s role controls govern console access, not local admin rights on managed devices. Full EPM requires a separate tool such as Keeper Security.
USB and peripheral device controlBlock, allow, or audit USB drives, printers, Bluetooth devices, and 18+ peripheral device types with granular policy control per device type and per user.Limited. Basic USB blocking is available. Granular peripheral policy enforcement across device categories is not a native Atera capability.
BitLocker managementFull BitLocker lifecycle management: enforce encryption policies, centrally manage recovery keys, and report on encryption status across the entire fleet.Limited. BitLocker recovery key retrieval is available through the Bitdefender add-on. Centralized encryption policy enforcement is not fully native.
Mobile device management
Native MDMBuilt-in MDM for iOS, iPadOS, Android, Chrome OS, and tvOS, managed from the same console as desktops and servers. No additional product required.Requires integration. Mobile device management relies on a Miradore integration. This is a separate product with its own console, adding cost and management overhead.
BYOD and conditional accessBYOD enrollment, corporate data containerization, selective wipe, and conditional access policies are all part of the native MDM capability.BYOD and conditional access are not native. They depend on the MDM integration and are subject to Miradore’s own feature scope.

Frequently asked questions.

Not exactly. Atera was built as a remote monitoring and management (RMM) tool for IT admins and MSPs. While it covers device visibility, alerting, and reactive helpdesk support, it lacks the full device lifecycle capabilities that define a true UEM platform, such as OS imaging, native MDM, built-in security, and DLP. Endpoint Central manages the entire endpoint lifecycle from enrollment to retirement within a single console and a single agent.

No. Atera has no native EDR, antivirus, ransomware protection, or DLP. Security features like threat detection require third-party add-ons such as ThreatDown (Malwarebytes) or Bitdefender Advanced Threat Security, each billed separately on top of the base subscription. Endpoint Central includes EDR, NGAV, browser security, and DLP natively, with no additional products required.

Atera’s AI Copilot focuses on technician productivity through script generation, ticket summaries, and basic troubleshooting assistance. Endpoint Central’s Zia AI operates at a deeper level, powering ML-driven threat detection, context-aware patching, AI-generated workflows, attack chain investigation with MITRE ATT&CK mapping, and predictive analytics across the full endpoint estate. Zia is also built into the core platform at no additional licensing cost.

Endpoint Central is purpose-built as a UEM platform and scored 9.0 vs Atera’s 8.7 for platform usability on G2. It includes capabilities that Atera simply does not have natively, such as built-in EDR, native MDM, endpoint privilege management, DLP, browser security, OS imaging, and CIS compliance templates. Atera’s gaps in these areas require separate integrations and additional spend, which affects how users rate it against true UEM solutions. Endpoint Central is also the only vendor named Customers’ Choice in the 2025 Gartner Peer Insights Voice of the Customer for Endpoint Management Tools.

No. Atera has no built-in mobile device management. Managing mobile devices requires a separate Miradore integration, which runs in its own console and carries additional cost. Endpoint Central includes native MDM for iOS, iPadOS, Android, ChromeOS, and tvOS, all managed from the same console used for desktops and servers.

Not necessarily, and for many organizations it works out cheaper. Atera’s per-technician pricing appears straightforward, but AI Copilot, Robin, advanced patch policies, and security add-ons each carry separate costs that increase total spend significantly. Endpoint Central uses transparent per-device pricing with a permanent free edition for up to 25 devices, and includes EDR, MDM, DLP, and browser security natively without extra products. When you factor in the integrations Atera requires to match Endpoint Central’s capabilities, Endpoint Central typically delivers more value at a lower total cost.
