These are the questions asked during OS Deployer Training
FAQ's
On creating an image, does creation will or can preserve all computer configuration and defined users?Image creation process do not include the items available under the User Profile. Only OS, partition, application and drivers specific to that model will be captured as in the image file.
How is the licensing agents handled , by client, concurrent, as if a license is used and applied to a client but pc crashes and license is lost how can this be retrived / reused? If it is a node based license, the license is attached to the system so there will be no issue in redeploying the image.
How to deploy windows with license key?You can use volume licenses or option to deploy the image without licenses and allow the computers to fetch the licenses from the licensing server.
Is PXE server a mandatory requirement for the OS deployment? PXE server is required for automated remote network boot for image creation and deployment and it is part of the OS Deployer.
Does OS Deployer support UEFI boot? Yes, OS Deployer supports UEFI boot
If you replace a machine, can you re-use the licence of the machine that was replaced?OS Deployer's licensing is MAC based. So, the license can not be transferred.
how long does it take to deploy the image? The time depends on the image size, bandwidth and bandwidth throttling. Say for 10 Gb image and 1GBbs bandwidth it take approximately 15 minutes for deployment.
What alternatives are there if the manage engine OS Deployer PXE server does not contain the NIC drivers for a machine? You will have to inject the drivers using WINPE, if the server does not contain NIC drivers.
How is this licensed? We have two types of license. Deployment based license and Machine based license. For more details refer our online store at https://store.manageengine.com/os-deployer/
Is this an add-on product that would need to be purchased or is it included in Endpoint Central?OS Deployer can be purchased separately or as an add-on product in additional to Endpoint Central.
We use all Dell. Do you need to use UD for different models within a company product line?Yes, you can use Universal Deployer to achieve this task.
When you take questions my question is if we have pxe working across multiple Vlans?PXE can work across multiple VLANS provided you configure your network to allow this.
How we can create reference (Master) image with latest windows update? You can do it in two ways. By installing the OSD agent and creating an online image, when the OS is working. You can also use a bootable CD or USB to boot and create the image.
Is deployment supported for X64 and X86 architecture?Yes, deployment is supported for both X64 and X68 architecture.
How are different NIC drivers dealt with across various machines and models? You can use Universal deployment feature which will help you to create an image from a model which can be deployed to any model by providing the required drivers from network share.
Can OS Deployer be used in vmware?Yes. The product has been tested with VM ware environment.
Can applications be pushed upon the completion of OS deployment? You can add the applications along with the OS during the deployment.
What is AMS?AMS is an Annual Maintenance Support which has to be renewed once a year and the OSD product is a one time purchase.
Can we manage or integrate OS deployer within Endpoint Central?Direct integration of OS Deployer with Endpoint Central is not possible. However, you can image a computer with Endpoint Central agent on it and deploy this image along with the OS to other machines.
Should we enable multicast in our network while deploying OS on multiple computers?Yes. It is recommended to do this image deployment via multicast during non-working hours to prevent impact on your on going network activities.
How can MS Office be prepared as an image for deploying to different machines with different license keys? Using the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC), you can distribute licenses and deploy MS office applications. If you do not use VLSC, you can use Microsoft Key management system or Endpoint Central's Software Deployment feature.
Can we capture Secure Boot enabled system image and deploy the same? Yes, we support Secure Boot enabled system imaging and deployment.
Consider the example where I create an image with a 500gb hard drive and want to deploy it to a machine with 250gb hard drive. Is this possibe? In this scenario, you'll not be able to complete the image deployment successfully.
Can I modify the existing admin accounts or can we only add new admins? It is the creation of new user accounts while the image is deployed.
We primarily use Dell machines and they have their service tag information in their BIOS. Can I create a template for the name that is LGFCU-{service tag} so that it will automatically name the machines based on thier service tag? Currently, naming the computers based on the BIOS information is not supported. However, you can provide a list of names in a file to use them.
Do I need to sysprep the machine before building the bootable media? Bootable media is basically the OS Deployer boot file. If it is a new machine, you can use the WINPE with injected drivers to boot with new drivers.
Since it doesn't look like we are using windows pxe booting, Can I preload drivers on the receiving machine? Some of our machiens do not have network ports and need to have USB to ethernet converters plugged in. Can I load that driver into the bootable so that the machine can have network activity or do I need to create a usb/cd bootable media and then download the drivers later It can be done using the sysprep. However, in OSD we have a plugin called Universal Plug-in which can inject the required drivers in to the image.
Can you do an upgrade image automatically.Let's say for example, Win 10 pro to Win 10 Enterprise with less manual user actions involved? Technically, an Upgrade process cannot be done. However it can deliver the Win 10 Enterprise image upon Win 10 pro.
