Agent Installation Failure for Windows Vista and later versions

Problem

You are trying to install Desktop Central Agent and the installation fails for computers using Windows vista and later versions.

Cause

One of the reasons for Agent Installation failure is when Desktop Central server and the computer, where the agent needs to be installed, belongs to different subnets. Computers using Windows Vista or later versions (Windows 2008 Server , Windows 7) by default, have their 'windows firewall inbound rules' enabled to accept only inbound connections within the local subnet, So we will not be able to connect those computers as their 'windows firewall inbound rules' would not accept any inbound connections from different subnet.

Resolution

You need to change the default 'windows firewall inbound rules' settings from Local subnet to Any. Follow the steps given below to modify the settings.

1. Go to the control Panel and click on Windows Firewall

2. Select the Advanced Settings from the left panel.

3. Under View and create firewall rules section, Click on 'Inbound Rules'

4. From the list of Inbound Rules Right click on the File and Printer Sharing (against Port 139 and 445) and select the 'Properties'.

5. Choose "Scope" tab and Under 'Remote IP address' section,

6. Click on "Any IP address" button (this enables all inbound connections).

7. Apply the setting and click on OK to save the inbound rule.

Now you can install the agents successfully.
