Data Breach

Lab test results of 15 million patients stolen in a data breach.

On December 17, 2019, Canada-based medical testing company LifeLabs revealed in a letter to its customers that a data breach affected their personal data. Around 15 million customers’ details including names, addresses, emails, login information, passwords, dates of birth, health card numbers, and lab test results were exposed.

The breach was discovered in October, but investigations with the third-party cybersecurity firm concluded recently. Charles Brown, president and CEO of LifeLabs, revealed on LifeLabs' website that the affected customers are spread over the British Columbia and Ontario regions. The investigations indicate that 85,000 of the impacted customers are patients from the year 2016 or earlier and based in Ontario. They have notified law enforcement and government partners about the incident.

“While we’ve been taking steps over the last several years to strengthen our cyber defenses, this has served as a reminder that we need to stay ahead of cybercrime, which has become a pervasive issue around the world in all sectors,” said Charles Brown.
