Email phishing

Chicago-based health care provider victim of a data breach.

In January 2020, the Sinai Health System reported that some of its patients’ data may have been compromised in a phishing attack. The exposed data includes names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health information, and health insurance information.

The incident.

The medical center detected a breach in October 2019, and with the help of security forensics experts, identified that unauthorized users had gained access to two of its employees' email accounts. The investigation found no evidence that these attackers accessed emails containing patient information. However, they identified 12,578 patients whose information was stored in the compromised email accounts and notified them about the breach.

With the help of the cybersecurity experts, Sinai has taken steps to protect its system from future attacks by resetting employee email passwords, conducting employee training, and enhancing email filtering protocols. It also reviewed and strengthened its security policies. Attackers usually resort to familiar, effective techniques, like phishing scams, to gain access to email accounts. A smart tool like Exchange Reporter Plus enables organizations to stay ahead of attackers by monitoring for and thwarting email-bound cybersecurity threats. Download a free, 60-day trial of Exchange Reporter Plus today.

  • Messages by body keyword. Identify all the messages in your mailbox that have a particular keyword in the body of the email.
  • Attachment name. Get a report of all emails in your mailbox that have an attachment with a specific name. With the names of the malicious files, you can take the necessary steps to stop email-bound threats.
  • Attachment type. Based on an attachment’s file extension, you can spot malicious software.
  • The number of emails received from a specific domain, sender, department, or external email address. Get reports on all incoming emails from an external email address, a blacklisted sender or domain, or a specific department.
