Maze Ransomware claims to have stolen credit card details of 11 million customers

Costa Rican bank Banco BCR is reported to have fallen victim to a data breach. The attackers claim to have stolen credit card information of 11 million customers. The culprit behind the breach is believed to be the Maze Ransomware group. The group had made the headlines recently for attacks on C ognizant and Hammersmith Medicines Research.

Maze claimed that it had managed to access the network in August 2019. However, the group was able to reaccess it in February of 2020, since the bank had not secured its network. With the COVID-19 pandemic underway, Maze decided not to lock the bank’s systems, but it stole credit card data of customers.

To confirm the hack, Maze leaked 240 credit card numbers with expiration dates and the corresponding verification codes (CVV). They claim to have a total of four million unique card details. It is unclear if the bank has agreed to pay the ransom. It would be advisable that customers of Banco BCR contact the bank regarding the breach to identify if their data was compromised.
