Automating Tasks with Configlets

In enterprises, when a need arises to fix faulty configurations or to make changes in multiple devices, the network administrators often find it difficult and time-consuming. Network Configuration Manager saves administrators from doing repetitive configuration changes, fault fixes and manual configuration uploads with the help of command scripts called 'Configlets'.

Configlets are command scripts that help to execute commands in configurations of multiple devices at one go. You can change passwords and execute commands that increase security in network devices with the help of Configlets. By doing so, the vulnerability issues in network devices can be fixed. Not just that, they can also be used to:
  • Download and upload configuration files
  • Enable/disable SNMP
  • Change passwords
  • Push configuration files in bulk
  • Upload IOS images
  • Upload Firmware
  • Update logon banners
  • Update access control lists 


How to fix Bandwidth Bottlenecks with Configlets? 

Let's take an environment consisting of several devices consuming a lot of bandwidth. In such cases, bandwidth bottlenecks tend to happen on a frequent basis. Configlet helps to prevent this from happening by executing command scripts. Once you identify network devices with low bandwidth using a traffic monitoring tool, you can use 'Access control list' (ACL) commands to control traffic and improve network performance in those devices. These ACL commands can be pushed to configurations of multiple devices at one go. This will help you avoid repetitive manual command executions and also saves a lot of time.

Adding Configlets to Network devices in NCM 

Configlets are available as templates and can be added manually in 3 modes, namely :
  • File transfer mode
  • Script execution mode
  • Advanced script execution mode

Avoid manual configuration changes and save time using File transfer mode!

By using file transfer mode, simple configuration commands like changing SNMP community, forwarding syslog messages, changing interfaces etc., can be implemented in multiple devices. 
Another advantage of using file transfer mode is that, it allows the user to upload a configuration in many devices/device groups at one go.


Achieve complete network security by implementing trouble shooting commands in Script Execution mode!  

You can secure your network by implementing password change commands in many networking devices using the script execution mode. Other troubleshooting commands like Synchronizing Running & Startup Configurations, access push commands etc., can also be executed in the selected devices using Script Execution mode. By doing so, you can achieve a reliable network performance.



Use advanced Script Execution mode for executing complex network commands and increase productivity! 

Advanced Script execution mode is used when :

1. There is a change of prompt after executing a command.

2. A command requires a prompt user confirmation.

3. There is a delay in response after command execution. 

Compex network commands like uploading OS images / firmware upgrade, configuring banner message, deleting files from flash etc., can be executed on networking devices using Advanced Script Execution mode.


 After creating the configlets, they can be executed by applying them on the respective devices and the execution results can be checked in the“execution history”. 


Scheduling Configlets:

Network Configuration Manager helps to schedule all types of configurations. The admin need not be present to execute commands on different configurations as he can specify a certain time at which he wants the configlets to be applied to devices.Hourly, weekly, monthly and daily scheduling is available for the convenience of the network admins thereby automating several tasks. Network Configuration Manager also sends email notifications when a configlet is executed.
