Uptime is a measure of system reliability, expressed as the percentage of time a machine has been working and available.
When referring to an IT network, uptime is the measure of availability of network devices, websites, and other services.
Network uptime is often measured in percentiles, such as “five 9s,” meaning a system that is operational 99.999 percent of the time. The goal of network uptime monitoring is to have 99.999 percent availability, which is less than five minutes of downtime per year. Downtime is the period of time when a system is not operational, the opposite of uptime.

Within a specific time frame, we take the number the seconds that the device was down, and divide this by the total number of seconds the device was being monitored during that time frame. As a result, we get the downtime percentage, which is then being subtracted from 100 percent to determine the uptime percentage.
Let's say we monitored a network device for 24 hours (which translates to 86,400 seconds), and in that time frame the device went down for five minutes (300 seconds). To define the uptime and downtime percentages, we perform the following calculation:
The total number of seconds the device was down: 300 seconds.
The total number of seconds the device was monitored: 86,400 seconds
We divide 300 by 86,400, which is 0.0035.
In percentages, this is 0.35 percent. This is the downtime percentage.
The uptime percentage for the device would be: 100 percent minus 0.35 percent is 99.65 percent.
Note: On Hold, Maintenance, Dependent Unavailable, Down, Not Monitored is calculated as Device Down duration.
