Configuring SMB file servers
DataSecurity Plus can analyze file and folder properties on file servers that host SMB/CIFS shares within a network, including NAS devices with CIFS/SMB-supported shares, Windows file clusters, and domain-joined Windows machines.
The DataSecurity Plus agent is not required for metadata analysis in SMB file servers. Instead, DataSecurity Plus has a built-in SMB file scan engine that's used to scan all files and folders. Scanning will start after the successful configuration of an SMB file server using the configured domain user account's credentials.
Minimum privileges required for scanning SMB shares
The configured domain user account should be granted Read permissions on both share and NTFS permissions to scan SMB shares. Refer to the minimum privileges guide for more information.
Configuring an SMB file server
Configure an SMB file server by following these steps:
- Log in to the DataSecurity Plus web console.
- Add the domain of the SMB file server you wish to configure.
- Select File Analysis from the application drop-down.
- Go to Configuration > Data Sources > SMB File Server.
- On the Configured SMB File Servers page, click Add Server.
- On the Add SMB File Server page, either choose your target domain from the Select Domain drop-down or click Add New Domain link to configure a new domain.
- Select the server of your choice and click Select.
- Besides Select Objects to Monitor field, click Shares and select the target shares from the list. Click Add Shares once you finish your selection.
- Select Add Server and click OK to configure a server.
- The configured domain user account must have Read permission to the configured shares for uninterrupted scanning.
- Currently, users can view all Storage-Based Reports except Disk Usage, Permission-Based Reports, Owner-Based Reports, and Folder-Based reports for the configured SMB file servers.
Updating an SMB file server
Update a configured SMB file server by following these steps:
- Select File Analysis from the application drop-down. Go to Configuration > Data Sources > SMB File Server.
- On the Configured SMB File Servers page, select the domain of the SMB file server you wish to configure.
- Click the Edit Configuration icon besides the name of the target SMB file server. Here you can:
- Add a share: Beside the Select Objects to Monitor field, click Shares and select the target shares from the list. Click Add Shares once done.
- Delete a share: Shares can be deleted by selecting the check box beside the target share and clicking the Delete Selected icon.
- Review the shares and click Update.
Disabling an SMB file server
If you want to stop analysis in an SMB file server temporarily, you can disable it by following the steps below:
- Select File Analysis from the application drop-down. Go to Configuration > Data Sources > SMB file Server.
- On the Configured SMB File Servers page, select the domain in which the SMB file server is located.
- Click Disable beside the target SMB file server.
Deleting an SMB file server
Delete a configured SMB file server by following the steps below:
- Select File Analysis from the application drop-down. Go to Configuration > Data Sources > SMB File Server.
- On the Configured SMB File Servers page, select the domain in which the SMB file server is located.
- Click the check box next to the SMB file server you want to delete and click the Delete icon.
Once a SMB file server is deleted, previously-analyzed data will be removed from the reports.
